Got the official news from our agency today. Here's some important info. from their e-mail...
*Roughly 50% of families currently do not pass court on their first issued court date.
*If a family does not pass court initially, a new court date may be issued approximately 1-1.5 months after the original court date or a few weeks after the original court date.
*Families who received referrals on the same day (or within the same week or few weeks) as other families will not necessarily have a court date within the same week or few weeks. Each adoption is unique and court dates do not always fall within chronological order of receiving a referral. The paperwork needed to secure a court date, and the time frame to acquire the paperwork, is unique for each adoption.
*You can expect communication from America World within 24-48 hours after your court date.
Your family’s court date is December 24, 2009. Please note your court date is scheduled on a day America World’s Corporate office will be closed. We will still contact your family to inform you of the outcome of your court date regardless. Likely you will receive an email with news of your court date.
Once your family has successfully passed court, you can expect to travel to Ethiopia roughly 4 to 5 weeks later.

Great News!!!! We have a court date!!! Mark was at the Transition Home and he was told that we have a court date of, get this, Christmas Eve! Praise God! If we pass court on the first try, which approx. 60% of cases do, then I will be traveling very possibly in late January. Of course, to remind ourselves and everyone else, 40% of cases do not pass on the first try. We have not officially been notified by our agency of this court date, but I guess since Mark was there in person he found out earlier.

Another big update on Mark's trip. He's doing great, spending lots of time with the baby and getting in some sight-seeing. He has not shown any signs of sickness, but is tired. He thinks the Transition Home does a great job caring for the babies and is pleased with how our baby looks and acts. He sent some great pictures of her smiling at him and another one I just love with her in the pink outfit I sent (which was clearly too big for her). She did have a blow-out right on his lap, which is great! Here's portions of his e-mails....
They had two kinds of breakfast pizza (kinda). One was dough with egg. The other was dough with syrup. They were both fine, but the syrup one was better. They had doughnuts, muffins and lemon cake/break. I had the lemon cake/bread with a cup of tea. While I was eating the chef offered to make me an omelet or eggs, so I had a cheese omelet. There was bread, too, so he toasted it for me. I'm plenty full now and T just showed up to take me to the transition home.
After breakfast, David drove T and I to the transition home. I spent about and hour and a half at the transition home. When I got there, the older kids were excited to see us and I asked if I could pass out some more Smarties. I think they were expecting them this time, because they came running and giving out kisses and thumb bumps. Some of the kids were trying to get extra, but being a good dietitian, I only gave them each one.
After that I went in and got (the baby) and brought her out on the porch. We spent the time playing and she slept. I don't think I fed her in the morning.
We went to Mount Entoto after the morning visit. The road on the way up is famous for having women that go toward the top to get firewood and carry huge loads back down the hill on their back. A lot of people use donkeys for it to. At the top is a historical church and the palace of the original Ethiopian Emperor from 1876. We walked around and I took a few pictures. There are also some good views of most of Addis Ababa. On the way down I asked if I could give some money to some of the women carrying the wood, but T said it wasn't a good idea. It may be because the wood gathering isn't exactly legal, but it's overlooked.
When we finished there we went back down the hill for lunch at Lucy. We had traditional Ethiopian food. Most of it was really good. Other parts not so much. At least half of the people eating there seemed to be foreigners. It's not far from the University, so I wouldn't doubt that some of them were associated with it. The US, British and EU embassies were close by, too, so that could have been part of it.
We went back to the transition home for 2.5-3 hours. We started by taking pictures of three other babies (these families asked us to do this and gave written permission, otherwise it's not allowed). I held the babies while T took the pictures. I think the families will like them. After the last baby I started playing with baby "H". I got quite a few more smiles and giggles out of her during the afternoon visit. We played for quite a while and she did quite a bit of laying on my chest on her belly. After a while it was time to eat, so I gave her her bottle. She ate really fast at first, but then decided to make my fatherhood official by having a blow-out on my lap. We went inside for a complete change and I had the ladies put the pink jammies on her that mama picked out. They're 3-6 months, so they don't quite fit, yet, but she looked cute anyway. She didn't want to finish her bottle, but she liked sucking on my finger. Eventually, she crashed and slept really good in my arms and then on her belly on my chest.! I left around 5:15 and she was still sleeping when I laid her in her crib. They
have 11 cribs in her room and one bed that's on the floor. It looks like they bring the kids out of the cribs 2 or 3 at a time to play with them on the bed. The ladies probably use the bed at night, too.

More details!!!
She's quiet and sweet, just like you've beensaying. She spent most of her time sleeping and the rest of the time eating.When I first got there, I think she was crying in the baby room (may just have been hungry). I think the girl wanted to get her to stop crying before she gave her to me. She cried mildly for just a little bit. We went outside on the porch. She's still tiny, so I asked how much she weighed, so the girl went and got the scale and I weighed her...4 kilos (8.8 pounds)...yee haa! She's really, really soft and her hair is, too. Her hair is still just like in the pictures. When she fell asleep after her bottle, she made a lot of smiling faces and even had a little bitty giggle. I was there about an hour and 15-30 minutes for the morning trip. She slept in my arms for a while after eating then I took her in and they
put her in her crib. We went to lunch and came back for an afternoon session. It
was about the same amount of time and she was either still asleep or having a new nap. She slept in my arms and on my chest for over an hour. A family came to take pictures of "Y" (another family's baby) during my visit. They're friends of Cindi (Y's Mommy) and just showed up. Luckily I was there with T or they wouldn't have been allowed to stay. You're not going to believe but she's a PE teacher here with a degree from SDSU. She graduated the year I came. You're not going to believe this either, but she lived on Calle Simpson (cross street with ours) with her aunt and uncle for 2 months. I'm in freakin' Ethiopia meeting old neighbors...crazy. Back to the baby. One of the ladies came out while she was sleeping to change her. I said, can I do it? That confused them, but they let me. They have a system and you have to follow it...wearing gloves for the first phase through wiping then using hands sanitizer before applying the new diaper. They sanitize the changing table between kids and always make you wash your
hands before handling the baby and take your shoes off before going in their room.
After changing, she stayed asleep for a while. She eventually woke up, so I started feeding her and showed her everybody's pictures. She said, "mama bootiful" or something like that. Anyway, to sum it all up, she seems really healthy and easy going and is as soft and sweet as can be...I love her. I'll send pics later.

Hi ladies. Well it's 10:48 and we just finished planning the trip. The driver
will be here in a few minutes to take me to play with *** (the baby). It's pretty
exciting. It will take about 30 min to get there, depending on traffic. I'll
stay until nap time and then will come back to hang out with the families until
they leave. He's picking me up at 8:30 each morning then we'll leave after a
couple hours and during nap time to do other things, then I'll spend the rest of
the afternoons with the baby. Tomorrow will include Mount Entoto and Ethiopian

Neighborhood seems rough but place seems nice. As you can see, the computer is working. It’s intermittent on the connection, though, so I’m typing this in Word. The converter fits, too, so I’m running of the regular electricity. I’ll attach one of my first pics here and will send others separately due to connection issues. Flight was good. Got another hour or two of sleep. I’m gonna shower now, so I can see our little baby sooner rather than later.

Well, I was wrong. It turns out Mark was unable to even leave the airport due to some restrictions. He did get some zzzz's and had fish and chips.
He said the b.o. sucked, but he combated it with his overhead fan. Then he was cold, but said it did help. He said that the airline offered in-flight entertainment with lots of movies, documentaries, etc. and the flight went really fast. He got to choose a window seat on this next flight, in case he can see Africa as they fly over. So, cool.
Hopefully, in 5 hours or so he will be landing in Addis and then soon after that will be holding our little one. He will have a a representative from our agency waiting for him at the airport.
I'm so excited to get any new information and see new pictures!

Mark is off. He got on the commuter plane no problem. When he got to L.A. he paid $60.00 for the extra bag which should get it all the way to Ethiopia. No discount, but not as much as I expected, which is great! He also ended up taking a ton of kids toothbrushes (with Shrek on them) and small toothpaste tubes that Katie and Ella's dentist donated. We went to Wal-Mart and bought some little toys, candy and t-shirts that we added as well. He actually took very little personal stuff and he will probably have plenty of room in his luggage for bringing home a few souvenirs.
Here's a funny one. He called and said he is behind a guy on the plane with b.o., but he said it's only a 10 hour flight. He called me again as they were taxiing and said the b.o. was bad.

Mark is taking some donations of formula, diapers, wipes, etc. to Ethiopia. **
We met another adoptive family a while back in San Clemente who had collected these donations, but they were unable to take them all with them when they went to Ethiopia. So, we took them off of their hands and off they will go today.
We are kind of hoping that the airlines will
"overlook" the approx. $150.00 extra baggage fee, since these are going to a good cause. Sometimes this can happen. We will keep our fingers crossed, otherwise we will have to pay it.

2 days until departure!
Mark leaves on Wednesday, flying first to L.A. for a duration of a whopping 44 minutes. He has a 2 1/2 hr. layover and then he then flies to London, for a duration of 10 hrs. 30 min. After that, he gets the joy of staying in the London airport for 9 1/2 more hours. I'm certain he will work or sleep to fill his time. After that, he will fly to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for a duration of 7 hrs. 40 minutes. Once he arrives there, it will be 8:45 a.m. and he will be fully rested and ready to start his first full day in Ethiopia.

Exciting news!!!
Mark just couldn't wait!!! He bought tickets today to go and visit baby "H". What a good Daddy. He will go and get to spend 4 days visiting her at the Transition Home. We aren't sure how long he will get to visit each day, but we are hoping it's several hours per day. He will hopefully gets lots of time to hold her, feed her, talk to her and just give her a bit of her Daddy while she's waiting on us to come and get her and bring her home. Of course, he will also bring her gifts and kisses from her Mommy and some other donations for the Transition Home. He also wants to make sure that she is doing well, gaining weight, etc.
This will potentially mean that Mark will NOT go with me (Jenny) when it's time to pick the baby up, which will allow him to stay home and take care of Ella and Katie. This is very important, because we know that Ella would miss us terribly and it was one of our biggest concerns. If Mark stays home, Ella will most likely be just fine. That's worth a lot to us.
Also, Mark needed and got permission from our agency to let him visit and stay at their Guest House. And there's no need to mention that Mark's adventurous side just couldn't pass up a trip that will take him halfway around the world on a few days notice. Mark also has several days off for the Thanksgiving break, so he won't miss any classes.
So, all in all, we really think this is a good decision. Financially, it will most likely be more expensive than if we went at the same time, but it's worth it to us. God will provide. It's hard to have a child in a 3rd world country and have to wait months to hold her, feed her, love on her, etc.
Just think of the pictures that we will get from his trip!!! Absolutely priceless. We will have pictures of her with her Daddy at this age that we wouldn't have had otherwise. It brings me great joy that he will be there with her NEXT WEEK!!!

Our agency received our acceptance letter and payment today. So, now we wait for a court date. Here's a bit of the e-mail we received today...
"After America World has received a family’s acceptance letter, we will move forward to request a court date. Families will be notified of this court date roughly 2-5 weeks later. A blessing happened in the last few days that I thought I'd share. We've known for a long time that when our referral came, we would be sending a check for another payment toward adoption fees. Well, Mark has been working very hard trying to make extra money for these adoption expenses and because his salary at work was cut by 10% this year. Well, it just so happened that two checks reached our mailbox this week. One was a property tax refund for overpayment due to the dive in the real estate values in San Diego. Another was an extra work check for Mark that arrives about every 3 months. The total of our adoption payment was 5,485 and the 2 checks totaled 5,263. Is God providing? I think so.
Wow! Have we been busy since we got the call! We have sent in our acceptance letter, another signed agreement and payment. We've contacted an international doctor to look over baby H's medical forms. We've shared her pictures proudly with lots of people and made copies and framed them. We've contacted a family traveling next week to ET and sent them a signed photo consent form so that they can take pictures of H when they are there. We did buy a few toys for her that we will send with another family going in early December. We've also had Ella's 3rd birthday since then, continued doing our best to nurse Katie since her tonsillectomy and tried to work in there somewhere. Has it only been 4 days?
Our agency posted this update on their website. Note the infant girl referrals dated DTE 1/9/09. One of those is us!!!

Today was the day!!! We got our referral!!! We got a call at 10:22 a.m. that we are the proud parents of a 2 month old baby girl. She is absolutely beautiful and looks great! I was at work and Mark was at home tending to Katie (who had surgery yesterday). I quickly had another teacher take my kids and we did a conference call with Mark, Katie and me. It was very exciting. I cannot give details about her or post pictures just yet, due to agency policy, but I will as soon as we are allowed. Just for the record, she is adorable. She has big, beautiful eyes and is very little. We love her already.
