Wow! What a wonderful first month home!!!

Our new family of 5 is running smoothly. I am so grateful. I have truly enjoyed my month with the girls and think we are all 5 bonding wonderfully.

Zoie has been busy. She had her first visit to the Dr. for a general check-up on February 18 and that went well. She weighed 13 pounds 13 oz. The Dr. said she looked great! She got a referral to a Dermatologist for her skin color variations and had her blood drawn the next day, which Mark said was awful. I guess it took a long time to get enough blood to run all the tests they wanted. She's gaining weight quickly. At her Dermatologist appt. on March 2, she weighed a whopping 14 pounds 10 oz. She eats A LOT! She is mainly on formula, (except for a few attempts at rice cereal and one with peas). She eats about 6 oz. about every 3 hours, sometimes sooner. We will start her more regularly on baby food very soon.

She is "talking" a lot and can easily roll over. She can push up pretty far on her arms and doesn't mind at all being on her belly. In fact, she prefers to sleep on her belly. If you put her on her back to sleep, she usually rolls right over. If she's on her tummy, she can rotate herself around until she's facing the other direction. She thinks Ella is very funny, but who doesn't, right? Her laugh is precious and she is still very smiley. She has just started to show some preference for us and has cried a few times when others have held her. Yeah! She's bonding. She slept through the night last night, but usually we can expect to feed her 1 to 2 times during the night. She cannot sit up, yet, but is doing a great job holding up her head. She's graduated from the size 1 diapers into size 2. Her thighs are getting good sized rolls on them.

She spent a few days with her Grandma (with Papaw Bob) when we got home. She also spent a lot of time with her Papaw (with Granny). Her Aunt Heidi is coming this Tuesday and her Grandma (with the Gum) is coming over Spring Break. Wow. She is so loved!

What am I supposed to do with this stuff?

Zoie has been "flying" like this a lot, lately.

My two little ones.

Ella is an awesome big sister.

Dear God,
Is this how it's gonna be in this family?
Love,
Zoie

And a one, and a two....

Zoie isn't the only one changing clothes during the day.

I've got him wrapped already!

Ella loves her new Sissy.

Papaw (with Granny) and I became good friends.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - part 1

The city of Addis is something to see. It's a busy city, with people everywhere. It's very poor, dirty, and rocky. There are little shops everywhere, shoe shiners on the streets and beggars. There is the sound of music blaring and horns honking. There is corrugated tin everywhere the eye can see. There is construction all over the place, streets and sidewalks in disrepair. In a lot of places it looks like a bomb went off and no one has cleaned it up.

There's so much more, but I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking for today.

Have I mentioned how funny Ella is lately? This should prove it. I had no idea what was going on because I was driving, Zoie stayed asleep the entire time and Ella just thought it was something funny to do. By the way, no child was harmed in the making of this picture.

We've been home about a week and a half now and I am so pleased at how things are going.

The most difficult part after coming home was the terrible jet lag. It lasted about 5 or 6 days. Big thanks to my husband, daughter and mother-in-law for allowing me to nap when I needed to. Besides that, Zoie is an absolute dream of a baby. She only really cries when she is hungry or tired and I can usually fix that! There has not been a time when I couldn't console her, which is awesome! She is very smiley, very soft and sooo cute!!! Ella loves her and the jealousy I worried about is limited. Ella's been a little bit more needy, but I expected that. She kisses Zoie on her own and "helps" me a lot with her by holding her bottle, getting diapers for me, etc.

I've been home alone for a few days with both kids and it's doable. I was able to get them both to nap at the same time today, but I think that will be an exception. We've been to the park once, Playtown once, and Peter Piper Pizza. The baby doesn't seem to mind her car seat, which is good, because I like getting out of the house for a little bit every day. Even if it is just to Target.

Here's some pics of our new family...Wow, am I blessed.

She loves a bath! Or is it a shower?

My new best friend is called a Bumbo (a gift from my wonderful neighbors). It helps little ones sit up when they can't on their own.

It looks like she's sitting up all by herself, but she's actually leaning forward and very well balanced.

Friday afternoon...through arrival at home

Warning...this post contains whining

After the coffee factory, we did some more shopping at the Post Office area. Granny stayed in the van with the baby and Katie and I did some fast shopping. We had limited time. We picked up more souvenirs and gifts. We also went back to the Guest House to get packed up and checked out, pay our final bills, take group pictures, pass out tips, say our good-byes, etc. We got Zoie's visa and the official "brown envelope" which needed to stay sealed until we got to the U.S. Here's our travel group.

Here's some AWAA friends...2nd from left is T., our guide, then Robel, Travel Coordinator, and David, our driver. (Not sure who the man in purple is.) These guys are very nice and are hard workers. Robel is trying to take kids who are homeless or almost homeless and get them into school (which comes with food if they attend) so that they will have a better chance in life.

We left for the airport later in the afternoon for our 7:30 flight. Once we got to the airport, Granny realized that she had left a painting back at the Guest House, so she rode back and got it, while Katie and I waited. The airport wouldn't let us wait inside for her so we waited outside. After she got back, we went through the first of many, many security checkpoints and waited in line to check-in for our flight. I had neglected to buy Zoie's lap pass ahead of time, so this created quite a problem at the counter. It had to have been over an hour later, when finally I was handed the boarding passes and paid $177. My mistake and I should have done it via-email sometime during the week. It would have avoided a lot of time standing with the baby. The flight was very late leaving Addis and this was hard on me. I just wanted to get started on the long trip home and we just sat there. I believe it was because the security line was extremely slow. They were checking people very carefully. It was the end of a busy, emotional and physically exhausting week and now a busy day was winding down. I was already so tired and in hindsight, I would have done things differently. For me, it would have been best to start the trip back home when I was a little more fresh and reasonably rested. It was not smart to leave Friday night after being awake since early that morning. Or, I should have planned an overnight stay in Dubai or something to allow for rest along the way. Just being honest and not trying to complain. I would not have been disappointed if we had missed our connecting flight because that might have meant a hotel! Anyway, we arrived in Dubai without any problems and had a short layover. The flight to New York left Dubai at 2:00 a.m. After more security and a horrible blow-out diaper, which lead to just tossing the outfit, we left for the 14 hr. flight to JFK. Luckily, Granny Pat had re-selected our seats to allow for an undesirable empty seat between us in the hopes that it would remain empty. Luckily, that dream came true and Katie did some good sleeping in 2 seats for a good chunk of the flight. Big thanks go out to Granny for helping with Zoie on this flight. She held her a few times so that I could take a few short naps. These naps were very helpful and I did feel a little recharged. I really don't know how anyone could do this trip solo.

After arriving in New York, we went through all the appropriate lines to get into the U.S., including the special line to bring our Zoie with us. All was in order and we were successful! We had to then get our bags and we took a breather and got a drink. Then, Zoie had another blow-out. After that was cleaned up, we headed toward our next airline and oops, we had to take a train to another terminal all together! Once we got in the right spot, there was a HUGE line filled with DC passengers that needed to be re-routed because of a big snowstorm. I had to be aggressive to get someone to realize that I was just trying to check in for a regular flight that wasn't cancelled. We had to say our goodbyes to Granny because she was on a different airline and we went through more security. Once we were on that flight, we heard the announcement that our flight time was 5 1/2 hrs. I realize that in comparison to 14 hrs., 5 1/2 is not much, but it seemed like forever. It felt like a tiny plane compared to what we were used to and we spent a lot of it in the back standing. Once we landed in L.A., we knew we had an incredibly short time to make our connecting flight. It was a fairly long walk and I just gave in and asked one of those moving carts to take me and I'm lucky I did. They called my name and said 1 minute as soon as I arrived. I believe this flight was about 20 minutes long and I know I fell asleep several times. Arriving in San Diego was awesome!!! I was completely exhausted and so happy to be home. All together, the trip time from door to door was about 36 hrs. 24 of that was in a plane. And add another 10 hrs. to that of additional awake time before leaving. And that's why I slept about 16 hrs. in the first 24 of being home.

This is what awaited me at the airport!!! My sweet Ella!!! My three girls all together!!! A very excited Grandma!!!

Friday

The beginning of possibly the longest day of my life.

We went to the coffee factory in the morning, which was actually kind of cool.

I was interested in the factory workers ...how many hours do they work per day, how many days per week, how much do they make, etc...I found out that they work 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, which I was happy to hear. They make around 650 birr/month, which is about $2.50 a day. Here they are in a line picking out the acceptable coffee beans.

These ladies enjoyed looking at their pictures on my digital camera and were friendly.

Katie had a delicious cappuccino when we were done. Baby Zoie is hanging out in the background.

And this activity was just the beginning.
